International Women’s Day is celebrated globally on March 8 every year. In 1975, the United Nations began celebrating International Women’s Day in the International Women’s Year. In 1977, the United Nations General Assembly invited member states to proclaim March 8 as the UN Day for women’s rights and world peace. The day recognizes the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The event celebrates women’s achievements and raises awareness about women’s equality and lobbies for accelerated gender parity. The theme for 2022 is “gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow”. Hastag: #BreakTheBias. Whether deliberate or unconscious, bias makes it difficult for women to move ahead, and knowing that bias exists isn’t enough. Action is needed to level the playing field. This year Nigerian Canadian Association has taken action by setting aside today, March 12th, 2022 to recognize a few inspirational Nigerian Canadian women in the GTA for their contribution to the development of our communities. According to a Spanish proverb, “To tell a woman everything she cannot do is to tell her what she can.” Welcome again to International Women’s Day, NCA Event 2022.
